There's a new Overview effect, that you can access with Super + W . It's basically the GNOME Activity view. KDE also now supports fingerprint login. It's also now much easier to set a default wallpaper, just right clicking on any image file will allow you to set it as the background. Panels can be dragged and moved using the main interface when editing Plasma panels. Right clicking on the desktop now shows a Configure display settings option. The Plasma Pass password manager has been redesigned, and zones that you can scroll in various widgets now use the same style. The weather widget will prompt you to be configured at first launch, you can decide to always show the date below the time in the clock, and the main menu's sidebar doesn't use arrows anymore. In the task manager, you can set new tasks to appear on the left instead of on the right.Programs that play audio will also get a volume slider in their tooltip. Very important notifications will now sport an orange strip on the side so you can tell that it's super duper important you look at it and maybe do something. The headers and title text are now more constrasted and more legible, notifications that are related to a video file will now show a little thumbnail of said file, so they're treated like all other multimedia files Finally, Krunner has a new inline help feature. The focus effect on various widgets, like buttons, text fields, checkboxes, or radio buttons has been enlarged. Your folder icons will also now follow your accent color if you chose one, or the color used for selections. Speaking of accent colors, you can now define a custom one directly next to the pre-made selections, which is much easier. Some color schemes haves been modified, with the basic Breeze being renamed Breeze Classic, so there's less confusion with Breeze Light and Breeze Dark, and the latter will replace Breeze High Contrast. In KDE, even the settings have settings and these have been moved to the system setting's hamburger menu. Pages that used a single grid or a list now have a more modern, frameless style. The display and monitor settings page now shows the scale factor for each display and their physical resolution, the speaker test feature has been revamped and looks better, and enabling auto login will now prompt you to make changes to your password wallet. Discover can now automatically reboot your computer once an update is complete, and it also shows a bottom tab bar if the window is very narrow, like on mobile devices. T he updates page has been reworked, and it tells you the source of the update. Discover can also open and install flatpakref files that you downloaded locally. KDE 5.24 keeps working towards making Wayland a first class citizen. It adds a drawing tablet page in the settings, it supports greater colors than 8 bits, The screenshot tool can now capture the active window on Wayland as well, and support for VR headsets is back, with better performance. You can also define a primary monitor, minimize all windows using the widget of the same name, and there are multiple improvements to touchscreen devices, notably to make the virtual keyboard appear, or with using styluses.

KDE Plasma 5.25 is the 27th edition of Plasma desktop that brings significant changes that include dynamic accent colour, floating panel, new wallpaper, more gesture support and many such features. Here, you can read details about the KDE Plasma 5.25 features in our round-up post. If you are running an earlier version of KDE Plasma via KDE Neon Linux Distribution, this is how you can upgrade to the latest version. How to Upgrade to KDE Plasma 5.25 Firstly, the upgrade size is around 40% higher compared to Plasma 5.24. The KDE Plasma 5.25 upgrade size in KDE Neon is close to 1 GB on my test machine. Second, make sure to close all the running applications before you start the upgrade process. The KDE Neon upgrade process is generally stable and never failed me. But if you want to be extra cautious and have valuable data, you may want to take a backup of those. But again, I believe it’s unnecessary, in my opinion. Steps for the upgrade process In KDE Neon, open Discover and click on Fetch Updates. Wait until the updates are downloaded. You can verify whether Plasma 5.25 is available via the Discover upgrade package list. Once you have verified, click on the ‘Update All’ button in the Discover window at the top-right. Alternatively, you can run the below commands from the terminal and start the upgrade process in KDE Neon. sudo apt update sudo pkcon update Restart the system after the upgrade process is complete. And after reboot, you should see the brand new KDE Plasma 5.25 welcomes you. Upgrading KDE Plasma in Kubuntu 22.04 and Fedora 36 For Kubuntu 22.04 users, you will not get 5.25 for its lifetime because it is a Long Term Support (LTS) release. Hence, KDE Plasma 5.24 LTS would remain for its entire LTS life cycle. In addition, Kubuntu 22.10 should feature the KDE Plasma 5.25 when released in October 2022. The famous backports PPA may not get the proper backport updates for an LTS version. However, you can verify when the PPA is refreshed and may follow the below commands for further updates. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports sudo apt-get full-upgrade Fedora 36 users should receive KDE Plasma 5.25 during the first point release due next month. Finally, Arch Linux users can update via the above methods once the packages are ready. It’s currently in the Arch testing repo. Post Upgrade Feedback I ran the upgrade process on a virtual machine with a fresh KDE Neon with KDE Plasma 5.24 installed. The upgrade process went smooth, with no surprises or errors. Well, it never failed for me to date. However, the server was a little busy; hence it took some time to upgrade. The upgrade time entirely depends on your internet connection and KDE servers. In general, it should be completed within 30 minutes. The first restart after the upgrade went fine and did not take much time. Performance-wise, I felt it’s a little smooth over the prior releases, thanks to several bug fixes and under-the-hood performance optimizations. So, overall, you can safely upgrade if you are in KDE Neon. And wait for the packages for Ubuntu and Fedora stable releases. Enjoy the brand new KDE Plasma! #kdeplasma #kde #kdeneon #kubuntu #opensuse Todays Video - How to Upgrade to KDE Plasma 5.25 from 5.24!

In This Video We Are Discussing About Bug fix version 5.24.1 of KDE Plasma has been announced. While it is stated that this is a bug fix release, it was released in February with many feature improvements and new modules to complete the desktop experience . ► Subscribe me here : 🤍 ► Follow me on Tumblr : 🤍 ► Follow me on Twitter : 🤍 ► Follow me on Pinterest : 🤍 KDE Plasma 5.24.1 LTS: First Point Release | Improved Plasma Wayland And Overview Effect Click Here to Watch More Entertainment : ► Linux Videos : 🤍 ► Buyer Guide Videos : 🤍 ► Raspberry pi Videos : 🤍 ► Review Videos : 🤍 ► Mozilla Videos : 🤍 ► Vpn Videos : 🤍 ► Ipad Videos : 🤍 ► Mac Os Videos : 🤍 ——Subscribe to stay up to date with the channel! —— Make sure to subscribe to the channel & select the 🔔bell push notifications (click the 🔔BELL icon next to the subscribe button) to be notified immediately when I release a new video. ✅ BE SURE TO LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, AND TURN ON NOTIFICATIONS!!! If you have any questions give me a shout on social media & I'll try and answer all the questions you might have. Thanks for watching and I’ll see you next time! This release is said to add a week of new translations and fixes from KDE contributors. While it is stated that there is a workaround for an unknown Qt issue that causes the undo dialog to be invisible, it is said that Plasma 5 should be discussed in the KDE Forums Plasma 5 dashboard.KRunner can already find documents and web pages, run commands, convert units and currencies, give the user definitions of words, do high-level math, and new features are always added with plugins. Wayland, the new graphics system that will replace the soon obsolete X11 system; It opens up a world of possibilities for more stable and visually consistent apps, support for touchscreens and orientation-sensing devices, and more. What’s New in KDE Plasma 5.24 Perhaps the important change in this release is the new overview screen, which is much similar to how GNOME Overview works. That said, it’s the best of both worlds, at least how it is designed. Users can invoke the new Overview by using the Meta + W key. It allows you to see the list of all open windows and virtual desktops. Between the list of virtual desktops and open windows, you have a search bar. The search bar also allows KRunner-styled searching. Breeze, Plasma’s default theme has also been received a visual refresh to make it more closely match the Breeze style for apps, improving the visual consistency between them. The developers have removed the “Breeze High Contrast” color scheme because “Breeze Dark” offers a similar look and feel anyway. On top of that, the default “Breeze” color scheme has been renamed to “Breeze Classic”, to better distinguish it from the “Breeze Light” and “Breeze Dark” color schemes. Users can now set custom accent colors (introduced in Plasma 5.23) on the “Colors” page and enable the “Highlight Changed Settings” option on “Night Color”. The feature is available via Appearance - Colors. Earlier, you could only choose from a selection of preset colors. In addition, changing the color scheme now toggles the standardized light/dark color scheme preference. This means that non-KDE apps that respect this preference will automatically switch to light or dark mode based on your chosen color scheme. The “Formats” page on the “System Settings” has been rewritten and provides a much clearer view than before. It looks much simpler now with better readability with available options. In terms of user experience, the font sizes have been increased for texts shown on the login, logout, and lock screens. It creates a more cohesive look, consistent with the window and avatar size. Inside the Dolphin file manager, when you right-click on any picture, you can see a new “Set as Wallpaper” option, just like the one that has existed in GNOME for a long time. This allows you quickly to set any wallpaper downloaded from the Internet. With KDE Plasma 5.24, the search field language of the “Settings” app is set to English. But even though your system language is not English, the search field will find results for an English keyword. On top of that, in terms of user experience, the font sizes have been increased for texts shown on the login, logout, and lock screens. #KDE #DesktopEnvironment #PlasmaDesktop #KDEPlasma #Linux Todays Video - KDE Plasma 5.24.1 announced!

First, you can pick an accent color from your wallpaper, You can also opt into the breeze classic theme, which will apply the accent color to the window title bars as well. You can choose to tint all colors using your accent color, so you get the same hue everywhere. The second big change is the floating panels. Panels on KDE used to be stuck against a screen edge, but no longer! You can now make them float above the screen edge they sit on, in the "More options" button when editing the plasma panel. When applying a global theme, you now get to pick which parts you want to change: you don't have to apply the theme in bulk. Another good thing for people who like having more consistency, is the integration of GNOME applications: headerbars will have a border radius more consistent with the Breeze look and feel, and the menus look a bit more native as well. First, if you're using a laptop that supports power profiles, you'll get a better looking pop-up in the system tray, with icons to reflect each profile. The user switcher applet also has a nicer look, with a picture of the currently logged in user, and the pop-up when clicking that applet now looks nicer as well, with more spacing. The pop-up menu for copying the date to the clipboard, in various formats has also been revamped to be more legible. First is touch mode. KDE Plasma has a tablet mode that was toggled automatically when the system detected that you were using a touchscreen only. Now, you can decide to toggle it on and off yourself Still on that note, you now get the ability to do gestures from the screen's edge, basically like hot corners. Swiping 4 fingers down on the touchpad will open the Overview, with your open windows, virtual desktops, and a search bar, that was the big new feature for plasma 5.24. Swiping 4 fingers up will bring an overview of all your virtual desktops, basically the desktop grid, and swiping 4 fingers left or right will move to the next or previous workspace. Other small changes include the ability to select a non native resolution for your display on Wayland , you can now see the frequency your wifi network uses if your network uses both 2.4 and 5Ghz, and the Krunner spell checker action now detects the language you're using and tells you if the spelling is correct. Discover now can display the permissions that flatpak apps use. The App Page also has been overhauled, with instant access to the license of an app, the size on disk, or the version, and it can now tell you when an app has been uninstalled but still has some data on disk. The sidebar will also show all subcategories that were previously located in the Applications submenu, so space is better used, and you're not wasting clicks. Finally, proprietary apps will now have a warning you can display by clicking a small icon next to the license name, to warn you that this app might do weird things, or collect data.

There are no groundbreaking changes here, as expected, since Plasma 5.21 released about 3 months ago, and it mostly focuses on improving support for Wayland, but there are some nice quality of life imporvements in here as well. Become a channel member to get access to a weekly patroncast and vote on the next topics I'll cover: 🤍 Support the channel on Patreon: 🤍 Follow me on Twitter : 🤍 My Gaming on Linux Channel: 🤍 Follow me on ODYSEE: 🤍 Or join ODYSEE: 🤍 The Linux Experiment merch: get your goodies there! 🤍 ## Quality of life improvements In the plasma desktop itself, you'll find many smaller improvements. The first one is the adaptive transparency for panels and their widgets. This feature will let you have panel transparency when you just have open windows floating around, and have them turn opaque when you have a maximised window. The new Menu introduced in Plasma 5.21 took ages for it to move to another application category when you hovered over it. This annoying delay is now gone, and it makes the menu a lot more responsive and a lot nicer to use. In the digitalclock, you can now choose to display the date next to the time at all times, instead of having it displayed under it if the panel was big enough. The audio applet lets you select a profile for each of your audio peripherals, right from the applet, instead of having to dig into the settings. Users of Klipper, the clipboard manager, will now be able to press Meta+V to get the clipboard history displayed at the current mouse cursor's location. You can now change the text size in sticky note widgets. In the task manager, when you hover over an app's icon, you get a thumbnail of that app and the highlight will only happen when you hover over the thumbnail itself. This behaviour is also the default. In the notifications area, notifications about files will now show which app will be used when you click the "open" button. When downloads initiated from a webbrowser are waiting for an action from you to resume or really start the download, the notification will also let you know. Finally, when you're broadcasting or sharing your screen, do not disturb mode will automatically enable itself. Krunner can now display multiple lines of text for search results. Krunner also won't display duplicate results from different runners. In terms of applications, Plasma 5.21 introduced a new System monitor, well, it's now the default and replaces KSysguard. In the system settings, the first page you'll see is a "quick settings" page, that shows some of the most frequently accessed settings, namely switching from a light theme to a dark theme, changing the animation speed, the wallpaper, or the single click/dual click behavior in the file manager. Plasma introduced offline updates in the previous release, and in Plasma 5.22, you can now enable or disable that behavior, so everyone can have their cake and eat it too. At least on distros that support that feature. Just a quick note: on KDE neon, you can still update manually in place, without a reboot, if you're using the command line, only updating through discover triggered that "reboot to update" behavior. ## Wayland First, the Plasma Activities are now supported on Wayland. THis is a feature I haven't really used yet on my KDE Desktop. Think of them as groups of virtual desktops: each activity has their own virtual desktops, widgets, and wallpapers. Exclusively on Wayland, when you're using the global menu applet, you'll see a "search" item on the right side of the menu, that lets you search through all items in the app's menu. This is something you could do in the Unity desktop, or on MacOS, and it's a really fantastic feature, taht I wish would come to X.org as well. Kwin also has received a huge update to better support the wayland protocol. First, performance is improved on non-Nvidia GPUs for fullscreen windows. Plasma also supports variable refresh rates and freesync screens when using wayland, and you can also hot plug GPUs, and Kwin will adapt automatically. Vertical and horizontal maximization, when you drag a window to the edges of the screen should now work correctly as well, and you're now able to use the "Present Windows" effect more reliably, to get an exposé-like view. Kde plasma 5.24. Kde plasma. Kde 5.24.Plasma 5.24.Kde. Plasma 5.24 Perfect Harmony Plasma 5.24 improves in looks, ease of use and consistency. Today the KDE Community releases Plasma 5.24, a Long Term Support (LTS) release that will receive updates and bugfixes until the final Plasma 5 version, before we transition to Plasma 6. This new Plasma release focuses on smoothing out wrinkles, evolving the design, and improving the overall feel and usability of the environment. Overview Use Overview to manage all your desktops and applications KRunner Discover KRunner features with the help assistant Fingerprint Readers Unlock the screen and authenticate apps with your fingerprints The first thing you will notice is Ken Vermette’s spectacular new wallpaper for Plasma 5.24. Ken created the Honeywave wallpaper and streamed the process live on YouTube, giving Plasma a whole new look.If you happen to prefer something else as your background, you can now set your wallpaper just by right-clicking on any picture in Dolphin and selecting Set as Wallpaper from the context menu. Furthermore, if you use the Picture of the Day wallpaper plugin, it can now pull images from Simon Stålenhag’s gallery, which is full of cool and creepy sci-fi images. Bring up the desktop context menu again and you will notice that there is a new Configure Display Settings item. This lets you adjust your screens' resolution, orientation, scaling, and position relative to other monitors. Desktop Panels are now easier to move around and stick to any edge you want, as you can now drag them from anywhere on their toolbar while in Edit Mode. And when you drag-and-drop widgets onto the desktop and move them around, they now smoothly animate moving to their final position rather than instantly teleporting there. Looks and Themes After the spectacular new wallpaper, the next thing you will notice are the changes to Breeze, Plasma’s default theme. It has received a visual refresh to make it more closely match the Breeze style for apps, improving the visual consistency between them. Plasma is all about customization, and we have worked on making the process clear and simple so you can adapt your environment exactly to how you like it. That is why the default Breeze color scheme has been renamed to Breeze Classic, to better distinguish it from the Breeze Light and Breeze Dark color schemes. Speaking of colors, Breeze now extends the feature that lets you pick accent colors (introduced in Plasma 5.23) and now lets you pick any color you’d like, should the pre-selected colors fail to tickle your fancy. Not only that, but changing the color scheme now toggles the standardized FreeDesktop light/dark color scheme preference. This means that non-KDE apps that respect this preference will automatically switch to light or dark mode based on your chosen color scheme. Global Themes can also specify and change the layouts of KDE’s Latte Dock. A theme must not only be beautiful, but it must make life easy for users. That is why we made the focus effect for user interface controls into a large “focus ring”. This makes the item that has keyboard focus much easier to perceive at a glance. Notificações To make critically important Plasma notifications stand out, they now come with an orange strip on the side to visually distinguish them from less urgent messages. Meanwhile, we have improved the contrast and visibility of the header and title labels in all notifications to make them easier to read. Another visual enhancement is that notifications about video files now display a thumbnail of the video in the notification itself, just like for image files. System Tray and Widgets Many widgets have received new features and subtle enhancements that improve their looks, the relevance of their information, and ease of navigating them. For example, we have added a Date always below time option for the Digital Clock. The Weather widget asks you to configure it when you add it for the first time to the tray, and now automatically searches through all available weather sources. The Battery & Brightness widget has been made clearer and now shows a more accurate title and icon for computers with no batteries. The new versions of the Clipboard and Network widgets can now be navigated with just your keyboard. Gerenciador de tarefas When you hover the cursor above a Task Manager item, the window thumbnail tooltip that pops up is now significantly faster to load, and display a volume slider for windows playing audio. The Task Manager’s context menus have been clarified and simplified. Start New Instance, for example, is now Open New Window and no longer appears for apps marked as having a single main window. Meanwhile, the More Actions item has been moved to the bottom of the menu and changed to just More. If you have any questions give me a shout on social media & I'll try and answer all the questions you might have. Thanks for watching and I’ll see you next time! Nitrux has just released a new update to their 2.x series of distributions, bringing us to version 2.1.0. Here is what’s new! Nitrux is a free, beautiful, open-source, desktop-oriented Linux distro. It’s powered by Debian, KDE technologies, and Qt, emphasizing aesthetics, user efficiency, and portable universal app formats. The distro features a modified version of the KDE Plasma desktop called NX Desktop. Furthermore, Nitrux brings its own set of Nitrux applications built upon Maui kit and Qt. So, in terms of appearance, Nitrux is arguably on par with today’s best-looking distros, such as Deepin or Zorin OS. Nitrux team released its major version 2.0 in January 2022. And now, the second release of this systemd-free (Nitrux uses the OpenRC init system) Linux distro for this year is out. So let’s see what’s new. Nitrux 2.1.0 Highlights We start with the fact that the 5.16.16 XanMod kernel is now the default in the distro. The XanMod kernel is widely popular amongst Linux gaming, streaming, live productions, and ultra-low latency enthusiasts. It features custom settings and new features and is built to provide a responsive and smooth desktop experience, especially for new hardware. Additionally, Nitrux 2.1.0 offers the latest mainline LTS and non-LTS kernels in their repos, currently 5.15.32 and 5.17.1, respectively. If you want to use any of them, run one of the following commands. sudo apt install linux-image-mainline-lts sudo apt install linux-image-mainline-current However, perhaps the most noteworthy new feature in this release is the upgrade of the KDE Desktop Environment to the latest and most current version. In Nitrux 2.1.0, you can enjoy updated versions of KDE Plasma to version 5.24.4, KDE Frameworks to version 5.92.0, and KDE Gear to version 21.12.3. On top of that, several apps have also received updates. For example, Firefox has been updated to version 98.0.2, which provides an easier way to download files. In addition, the widely popular open-source office suite LibreOffice has also been updated to version 7.3.1.3. Another key highlight of this release is the availability of firmware packages for Broadcom 43xx and Intel SOF devices. On top of that, Nitrux 2.1.0 adds various packages, including the ifuse FUSE module for iPhone and iPod Touch devices and other software provided by libmobiledevice. We can’t fail to mention that gaming enthusiasts and Steam users have reason to rejoice with this release. So why do we say it? Nitrux 2.1.0 adds a shortcut to the application menu to install Steam. Keep in mind that Steam’s installation will take place in the background. Last but not least, due to numerous user reports mentioning how they were logging in to the Wayland session, which is inoperable, resulting in a negative user experience, Nitrux 2.1.0 excludes the graphical sessions of Cask from appearing in SDDM. To upgrade from the previous version of Nitrux 2.0.1 with NX Desktop to version 2.1.0, do the following: sudo apt update sudo apt install only-upgrade nitrux-repositories-config amdgpu-firmware-extra sudo apt install -o Dpkg::Options::="force-overwrite" linux-firmware/trixie sudo apt dist-upgrade sudo apt autoremove sudo reboot #Nitrux #NitruxLinux #NitruxOS #KdePlasma #Debian Todays Video - Nitrux 2.1.0 Is Here, Offers the Latest KDE Plasma!

And KDE Plasma 5.24.2 LTS was officially released with fixes for various bugs. Check out the news and see how to install on Linux. KDE Plasma Desktop is an amazing environment that offers a beautiful looking desktop that takes full advantage of modern computing technology. The team behind the project says that if you're looking for a familiar working environment, Plasma Desktop offers all the tools you need for a modern desktop computing experience so you can be productive right from the start. Incidentally, through the use of scalable visual effects and graphics, the desktop experience is not only smooth, but also pleasing to the eye. Now, the KDE Project has released KDE Plasma 5.24.2 as the second maintenance update for the latest and greatest series of KDE Plasma 5.24 LTS desktop environments, to address more issues and improve overall stability and reliability. What's New in KDE Plasma 5.24.2 KDE Plasma 5.24.2 is here just a week after KDE Plasma 5.24.1 and appears to be a small update that further improves the new Overview effect for the Plasma X11 session so that it doesn't trigger inappropriately on the lock screen when press the target key. The KDE developers also continue to improve the Plasma Wayland session and in this second point release they fixed an issue where the virtual keyboard would not appear even if it was configured correctly. Another interesting change in KDE Plasma 5.24.2 is the addition of an indicator line to the Show Desktop applet that appears when the desktop is being displayed. Also, the Minimize All applet indicator line has been updated to touch the edge of the panel, no matter how its inner margins are set. Other than that, this update improves the title/header text in menus to no longer be clipped when it is longer than the text of any of the other menu items, improves the Emoji picker to use a more appropriate icon for the Symbols page, and improves the Hot New Stuff feature to only rely on the expiration date if it is less than 24 hours. The Pager applet has also been improved for Plasma X11 session, Task Manager now hides unnecessary scrollbar and Folder View now hides additional settings that are not relevant to List View. For Plasma Mobile, this update improves the background darkening of the landscape actions, fixes the app drawer to interact in an empty space, and fixes the TaskPad close action. The next point release of the KDE Plasma 5.24 LTS series is planned for March 8, 2022. How to install or update Plasma 5.24.2 is already official, but as usual, that doesn't mean we can easily install it on our Linux distribution. The first system to have it available will be KDE neon, where it will likely arrive in the next few hours. Later, they will add other distributions, among which the Rolling Releases will appear earlier, although that doesn't mean they will soon; it may take a few days or even a few weeks. So, the KDE Plasma desktop environment will soon arrive in the stable software repositories of your favorite Linux distribution, especially releases like KDE neon, Arch Linux, openSUSE Tumbleweed, and Solus. #KDE #KDEPLASMA #KdePlasma #LTS #PlasmaDesktop Todays Video - KDE Plasma 5.24.2 LTS released with more fixes for Plasma Wayland!

The new version of the hyper configurable desktop environment brings a bunch of new things, like a brand new overview effect, reminiscent of the Activities view of GNOME, that mixes your workspaces and your open windows, plus a Krunner search field that's immediately active by default. Folders will now follow the color you chose in the accent colors section, so you get that extra touch on Dolphin's icon and when browsing your filesystem. Plasma also now supports login in and authenticating with your fingerprint, and it fixes plenty of issues with multi monitor support and Wayland, on top of the continued work to make the system settings more legible, and Discover, the app center, more robust.

Anyone who owns a fingerprint sensor in a notebook or as a separate device will soon be able to use it with Plasma 5.24 to easily, quickly and securely log into a plasma session. Has been in the works for a long time The function has been in the works for a long time and , as Nate Graham currently reports in his blog , the code has just been made available for Plasma 5.24. The fprint project is used in the background . Other components involved are the SDDM session manager, the Polkit KDE agent and the Kscreenlocker. KCM module The software for registering the fingers is integrated into the system settings as a KConfig Module (kcm). Any number of fingers can be registered there, but their naming needs to be improved. So far, only generic identifiers such as the right middle finger or left index finger have been specified, which makes it difficult for multiple users to use it. Once the registration is done, the user can not only dial into a plasma session using the fingerprint sensor, but also activate apps that require a password. In addition, the input of the password can be replaced by the fingerprint in the console for actions that use sudo for authentication. And something else Further innovations for Plasma 5.24 can be found in Nate's blog. These include improved options for enabling, disabling, or removing Flatpak repos in Plasma Discover. Furthermore, the obligatory progress in the integration of Wayland as well as the initial provision of the backend for Generic Buffer Management (GDM) in the Nvidia driver should be mentioned. According to Nate, this is accompanied by many improvements in the use of plasma with the proprietary Nvidia driver. The release of Plasma 5.24 is scheduled for February 8, 2022. :: More :: KDE Plasma is a really dynamic desktop environment, and the new features added are useful and simply enjoyable. Therefore, it is strange that so far there has been no support for fingerprint readers, which have been present in laptops for a very long time. However, with KDE Plasma 5.24 this will change. KDE Plasma will handle the fingerprint reader. Its use will be wider than logging into the account Fingerprint readers are an element that has long been found in, for example, laptops. GNOME has been supporting them for a long time, which allows us to log into the system faster and securely, as well as verify our user. Oddly, KDE Plasma will only get this option now, but better late than never. KDE Plasma 5.24 will finally allow you to comfortably use the fingerprint reader. The appropriate option can be found in the user profile settings. The fingerprint reader will help us not only log in to our account faster, but also speed up entering the password when a program asks us for it. Ba! The fingerprint reader will also work in the terminal when we enter the command sudo. KDE Plasma 5.24 is expected to be released on February 8, 2022. Users of KDE neon and Manjaro Linux KDE Edition will probably benefit from this version immediately. In the case of Kubuntu, you will have to wait for the next system release. #PLASMADESKTOP #KDEPLASMA #FINGERPRINTREADER #INGERPRINTAUTHENTICATION #KDE Todays Video - KDE Plasma 5.24 will finally handle fingerprint readers!!

Some interesting changes are planned as of making this video for the KDE Plasma 5.24 release. One of the important update is the new way of looking at your Plasma Activities and Virtual Desktops. The changes are still in development, but we get a glimpse of it and here are the details. Activities and Virtual Desktop in Plasma In KDE Plasma, the activities and workspaces/virtual desktop are two different concepts. Often they feel similar, and many users use them together to make a productive working system. Activities are a list of tasks, projects or widgets which you can define. And you can turn off/turn on, stop tracking those activities together when defined properly. On the other hand, the Virtual desktops are separate workspaces which you can create. And switch between then using CTRL + F1, F2,…so on. They can have their separate open applications and Activities. It’s a little confusing, but they are an excellent productivity booster if configured properly. For example, say, you want to create three workspaces – one for gaming, one for watching movies and another for development. You can define separate activities and widgets for each of virtual desktops. For gaming, say, you might want a separate task bar or panel with only specific widgets. Or, for development, you might want to have a separate list of daemon or server to run when that activities activated. In those scenarios, they are super effective when used together. The New KDE Plasma Overview Screen Today (as of Plasma 5.23), there is no such option to view the Virtual desktops, open windows and search together in KDE Plasma. There are widgets that can achieve this via activities. But they serve only one single purpose. The new KWin effect or Overview screen is changing all of that. As per the merge requests in GitLab, the new overview screen will be a full-screen view. It features the list of virtual desktop as thumbnails at the top, with an option to add more. At the middle section of the overview screen, you can see the list of open windows of the selected virtual desktop. Between the list of virtual desktop and open windows, you have search bar. The search is expected to mimic the KRunner type search, which find files/shortcuts across your desktop. The Search happens on the fly. Search is done across your desktop – that is – applications, files, browser tabs, documents – everything. I am not sure whether it searches the file contents, thought which I need to test. When you start typing in the search bar, the open windows expected to go away – although I am not sure of that. The above features are yet to land in the unstable version as of writing this. So, wait until the BETA of this version of KDE Plasma to experience it. Performance I am little skeptical about the performance of overall Plasma Desktop after this implementation. Think about KRunner. It’s one of the best Linux desktop launcher – hands down. But in my personal opinion, KRunner takes around 3 to 4 seconds to launch in all types of hardware. Not sure about you, but I always felt that. #Kde #Kdeplasma #Gnome #Linux #DesktopEnvironment Todays Video - KDE Plasma 5.24 Adds An Overview Effect Inspired By GNOME's Activities Overview!

As scheduled, the KDE project has released a new point update to its graphical environment this afternoon in Spain. This time it is Plasma 5.24.4, another maintenance release that has come after a third in which more bugs than expected were corrected. And it is that KDE, with Nate Graham in the lead, did not expect so many little things to appear to repair in a version of their desktop that at first seemed to have no cracks. In Plasma 5.24.4, as in practically all previous updates, fixed a couple more bugs to improve the experience when using Wayland. One is for when used in a virtual machine, where sometimes mouse clicks would drift a bit. The next News list it is not the official one, but part of what Nate Graham publishes during the weekends. Some new features of Plasma 5.24.4 In the Plasma Wayland session: When the desktop grid effect has been entered with a four-finger swipe up, it can now be exited with a four-finger swipe down, and the animation is also a bit smoother. When running the Plasma Wayland session on a VM, clicking something now makes the click actually go to the right place, instead of being slightly offset. The “RGB Range” function is no longer sometimes confused and disabled. Opening a new private window in Firefox using its Task Manager task context menu no longer sometimes opens the window with the HOME directory path in the URL field. When using a global menu, closing the active app now clears the menu bar instead of leaving your menu there like a zombie. Window title bar buttons now invert as expected when using the system with a right-to-left language. KWin's blur effect no longer sometimes causes windows that use blurred backgrounds to flicker. KRunner-powered searches are now case-insensitive when matching text on System Preferences pages, so they can be found more easily. The multiple boot screens app in System Preferences now works. Plasma 5.24.4 has been officially released, and it won't be long before it hits KDE neon or the KDE Backports repository. The rest of the distributions will have to wait more or less depending on their development model. #KDE #KDEPlasma #LTS #PlasmaDesktop #DesktopEnvironment Todays Video - KDE Plasma 5.24.4 LTS arrives with improvements for Wayland, KRunner and KWin, among others!

Layan has a GTK variant. To install it, click the "Configure GNOME / GTK application styles" in the Application Style panel, then "Get new GNOME- GTK Application styles". Search for Layan, and click "install". For the icons, I use the "Inverse-blue-dark" icons, which you can get from the "Get new icons" button. The plasma theme is also the "Layan" theme, you can get it from the "Get new plasma styles" button. The window decorations I use are called Layan. You can get them from the "'Get New Window decorations". The widgets I use are called "Window title applet", "Latte separator", "Better Inline clock", and "latte spacer". I have a top bar with a global menu, and a dock to run and manage running apps. I don't use the regular Plasma panels to get that result, though, I use latte dock. Latte can import layouts: Then, right click on the dock, and select "Edit dock", then right click on it again, and select "Layouts - edit layouts". Here, you have an "Import" button, select "Import from local file" and go select my layout. If you'd prefer to see each tweak I made, here we go: - The main dock, I haven't changed much. I removed every applet there that wasn't latte tasks, and every separator. In the Appearance settings, I set an absolute size of 48, disabled zoom on hover. I added a 10% margin, with 15% thickness, and added 8px between the dock and the screen edge. The background is 50% opaque, with a 34% radius and 29px shadow. I also enabled blur and shadows. Now, for the top panel. - Right click on the dock, and select "edit dock", then right click again and select "Ad dock / panel", then "Empty panel" In that panel, I added the following widgets: - Application launcher: I configured the applet by changing its icon, I used the draw-circle icon that's available from the "All" icons drop down menu. - Window Title widget. I configured it to only display the application name, and not to show the icon. The name is written in bold. - Latte separator, and the global menu - I then added a latte spacer, followed by the better inline clock widget. I configured it to have a font size of 16px, and show the date and separator, using a 24h clock. - Finally, there's another latte spacer and finally, the system tray widget from the base Plasma desktop. Having both latte spacers use the setting "fill available space" makes the clock centered. In terms of how the panel is laid out, I set it to appear on the top edge, and checked the "Hide floating gap for maximized windows" box. In the Appearance tab, I set it to be 28px, with a max length of 98% so it doesn't extent to the full length of the display. I added an 8px gap from the screen edge, and no margins at all on the panel. It's 50% opaque, with blur and shadows enabled, and has a 34% radius, with 29px shadows. I didn't change the Effects tab, but here it is just in case.

Picking up with the less interesting tasks behind us, we shall work together to finish the Plasma 5.24 wallpaper! During the stream I'll also dispense tips, advice, go into detail on various tools, while also answering any questions you may have. Update: The livestream is being moved to tomorrow (Mon 10th January, same time)! I'm very sorry for the reschedule, the voicebox is on the fritz which makes a conversational show a tad difficult. Otherwise feeling fine! I'll take the extra time to make sure the Monday show is even better!
