Sound artist Steve Mould uses noise to create intricate patterns on a metal square called a Chladni Plate. When a bow plays against the metal square, parts of the plate begin to vibrate. Couscous then dances with the vibrations to form detailed patterns.The end result is called a Chladni Figure. Oft fragen sich Kollegen, woran es scheitert, dass potenzielle Kunden sich gegen ein Instrument von ihnen entscheiden. Und ja, mal abgesehen vom Klang - der für den Berufsmusiker entscheidend ist - liegt es dennoch oft auch an anderen Gründen, die Musiker davon abhalten, sich in ein Instrument zu verlieben. Von fünf menschlichen Sinnen stehen uns Geigenbauer vier zur Verfügung und es ist nun einmal nicht ausreichend, wenn man diese nur zu 25% bedient, indem man ein Instrument baut, das gut klingt. Oft gelingt nicht einmal das, wobei es gut möglich ist, dass das Instrument in einem blinden Vergleich klanglich gar nicht so schlecht abschneidet. Es sind die drei anderen Sinne, die ein Instrument subjektiv besser klingen lassen können oder aber den Klang stark in den Hintergrund rücken. Wenn ein Instrument unästhetisch ausschaut, nicht angenehm zu stimmen und spielen ist, weil man am Hals immer eine Delle wahrnimmt, und zusätzlich noch stark nach unerwünschten Lackbestandteilen riecht, dann kann es noch so gut klingen aber ein Musiker wird sich wohl nie damit anfreunden können. Ganz anders ist es bei einem aufregenden, antiken Erscheinungsbild. Das weckt das Interesse von Musikern. Lässt sich das Instrument angenehm anspielen, hat ein gutes Ansprechverhalten und eine starke Präsenz, will man es schon gar nicht mehr aus der Hand geben. Wenn es zusätzlich zu Brillanz und Obertonreichtum auch noch angenehm nach einer Propolispolitur riecht, dann kann man Musiker tatsächlich überzeugen. Und sie werden damit ein Leben lang glücklich sein. Ganz im Vergleich dazu, wenn man jemandem ein Instrument aufschwätzen muss, um es verkaufen zu können. Das führt unweigerlich zu Problemen und wir können davon nur stark abraten. Project Site: 🤍 In this project, the team connected the worlds of classical acoustic instruments and mechatronics to create something new and unique. The instrument in question is a Hurdy-Gurdy, which were common in the medieval to renaissance eras in Europe. It is similar to a violin in some respects, however the bow is replaced by a wheel which is traditionally turned with a crank. To bring this instrument into the digital age, we used a Raspberry Pi, along with several motors to emulate the cranking of the wheel and the pressing of keys against the strings to change notes. In the software side, MIDI files as well as live input were translated into the mechanical actions necessary to produce the appropriate notes and pace. For example, if we received the note A we would trigger the appropriate linear actuator to sound A on the string. Finally, a UI application was made to configure and run the project.
